She’s one of the core members of Senior Send-Off, a class tasked with planning, modeling, and executing the school’s inaugural ceremony. When she was a sophomore, Shannon toured the construction site for d.tech’s new permanent campus, sat in on meetings with architects, and suggested elements to be incorporated into the final design. David Boles, 18As the cofounder of d.tech’s First Robotics Competition team, Boles has a mere nine weeks to build an 8-foot-tall obstacle-dodging robot before it faces off against other high schools’ droids.

Design Tech's first campus was at Mills High School in Millbrae, California. School leaders had initially requested space at Burlingame High School, but district officials opined that there was no space available at BHS.[16] Intended to be a temporary campus, d.tech was located within a single hallway at Mills. In the first two weeks of school at the Mills campus, instead of attending academic classes, students were tasked with designing their classroom layouts. They were also required to take a field trip on the second day of school due to Mills' first day of school. Margarita is a Bay Area native who has worked in local schools and districts for 27 years.

Recent inventions include a website that matches students with tutors, a self-watering planter, a light-therapy alarm clock, and an electric scooter with a brushless DC motor. The Dual Enrollment participation rate reflects the percentage of students at this school who are taking college courses while in high school. Credits for these courses apply both to high school diploma requirements and college graduation requisites.
‘Design thinking’, a problem-solving practice from Stanford University, is infused in everything students do. Now Reddy is interested in using VR technology to create outdoor-simulating experiences—hiking, scuba diving—for people with physical disabilities. Vani Suresh, 16D.tech encourages its students to tackle real-world problems. For Suresh, that meant finding a better way to extricate herself from creepy dates. In wearable-tech class, she and her team developed the Iris (named after the messenger of the Greek gods), a Bluetooth-enabled button that attaches to any item of jewelry.
